7 AI tools to explore — with realistic free-plan limits.
Reviewed: 26 October 2026. Free access does not mean unlimited use. Features, eligibility and allowances can vary by account, country and platform. This is a source-reviewed guide, not a hands-on test of every tool.
AI can help students brainstorm, understand difficult ideas and organize projects. Choosing a small toolkit is usually more practical than signing up for many subscriptions. The seven options below offer free access or limited free features, but some advanced functions require payment.
Quick choice: pick a tool for the task
- Explain a concept: ChatGPT
- Summarize material: Google Gemini
- Find starting sources: Perplexity
- Design a presentation: Canva
- Check English writing: Grammarly
- Try a background cutout: remove.bg
- Edit a class video: CapCut Web
1. ChatGPT — brainstorming and explaining concepts
Use ChatGPT to break a difficult topic into smaller questions, build an essay outline or generate practice questions. Treat its explanation as a starting point: it may be wrong, and an everyday analogy can omit important scientific detail.
Explain quantum entanglement for a beginner in under 200 words. State where your analogy breaks down and give me three questions to check my understanding.
Free-plan reality: A free plan is available. Model access and tools such as uploads, image generation and research have limits; check the current in-product notice rather than assuming a fixed allowance.

2. Google Gemini — summaries and research preparation
Gemini can help turn a document into a study outline or identify questions to investigate. When a supported upload option is available, use a document you have permission to share. Do not assume it has read every page of a long file or independently verified every claim.
Summarize the three main arguments in this document. Cite the relevant page or section when available. Clearly separate the author's claims from your interpretation and flag anything you cannot locate.
Free-plan reality: Access without a Google AI subscription has standard limits. Uploads, research features, model choices and connected Workspace tools have separate availability conditions. School-managed accounts may have additional restrictions.

3. Perplexity — discovering sources to read yourself
Perplexity provides search-based answers with source links. Those links make checking easier, but a citation does not prove that a claim is correct, that the source supports the sentence or that the source is an academic journal. Open the original pages, check dates and prefer primary research or official data.
Find recent official reports on renewable energy in Europe. Link to the original reports, give their publication dates and distinguish measured results from projections.
Free-plan reality: The Standard plan includes basic searches and limited advanced searches and uploads. Its help page describes basic search as practically unlimited; this is not a guarantee that every feature is unlimited.

4. Canva — slides, posters and visual projects
Start with a presentation template or an available Canva AI design tool. Give it the audience, topic and slide count, then edit the wording, diagrams, contrast and source credits yourself. A finished-looking slide deck can still contain inaccurate text.
Create a five-slide draft about renewable energy for a high-school class. Include an introduction, three energy sources and a comparison slide. Use placeholders for facts that need sources.
Free-plan reality: Canva Free includes design tools and free assets, with a limited AI allowance. Some templates, stock assets and AI features require a paid plan. Check the current allowance and export conditions before building a project around a particular feature.

5. Grammarly Free — spelling, grammar and tone awareness
Grammarly can help identify writing issues and show how your tone may come across. Review each suggestion so that technical terms, quotations and your intended meaning remain intact. It does not replace subject knowledge or your institution's citation rules.
Try it: Check one paragraph, compare the suggestions with the original, and accept only changes you understand.
Free-plan reality: The free plan covers spelling and grammar checks, tone information and a limited generative allowance. Full-sentence rewrites and other advanced features are listed under paid plans. Do not start a paid trial just to follow this guide.

6. remove.bg — background removal for a project image
Background removal can help isolate an object for a slide or poster. Use an image you own or are licensed to edit, then inspect fine edges, hair and transparent areas before downloading. Processing time and quality depend on the image; a five-second result is not guaranteed.
Try it: Use a non-sensitive photo of an object against a plain background and inspect the cutout on both light and dark backgrounds.
Free-plan reality: Free preview or low-resolution access is limited. Higher-quality downloads and commercial use may require credits or a suitable plan; check the current pricing and terms for your intended use. Do not assume a full-resolution, unrestricted download is free.

7. CapCut Web — video editing and caption review
CapCut offers browser-based video editing and automatic caption features where supported. Start with a short clip and test the whole export workflow before editing a long assignment. Correct names, terminology, punctuation and timing in generated subtitles.
Try it: Import a short recording, choose the correct spoken language in the caption tool, generate subtitles if your account permits it, and manually check the result.
Free-plan reality: Some editing features and assets are free, while AI tools, caption options or export settings may require Pro. Do not assume every auto-caption workflow or 1080p export is free. If export requests payment, inspect the project for premium assets and replace them with free options rather than purchasing anything automatically.

A responsible student workflow
- Read your course's AI policy before using a tool for assessed work.
- Use your own notes or licensed materials. Avoid uploading passwords, identity documents, grades or other people's private information.
- Ask for explanations, questions and outlines; do not submit generated work as your own where this is prohibited.
- Check facts and citations against original sources, and disclose AI assistance when your institution requires it.
- Keep your original files and test a short export before committing to a design or video tool.
What to watch next
Voice, image-based interaction and multi-step assistance are areas to watch, not guaranteed future benefits. Assess new features by whether they help you understand the material, protect your information and produce work you can verify. Avoid choosing a tool solely because it promises automation.

Final thoughts
Choose one tool for a clear task, understand its free limits and keep checking the output. AI is most useful when it supports your learning rather than replacing the reading, reasoning and practice that help you learn.
