5 Android Safety Checks: A Beginner’s Guide with Examples

Checked: October 28, 2026 · Beginner guide

You do not need to change every Android setting at once. Start with these five checks, understand what each control does, and keep the permissions your essential apps need. Menu names and available features differ by manufacturer, Android version and device.

This guide uses official Google documentation. The examples below are illustrative decisions, not screenshots from your phone or proof that a particular app is unsafe. No setting guarantees complete protection.

1. Check Google Play Protect

  1. Open the Google Play Store and tap your profile picture.
  2. Open Play Protect and review the displayed status.
  3. In its settings, check that Scan apps with Play Protect is enabled.

Google recommends keeping Play Protect on. It checks for potentially harmful apps, including apps obtained outside Google Play. A clean result is useful, but it does not prove that every action on your phone is safe.

2. Review app permissions

Open Settings → Apps → the app → Permissions. Alternatively, search Settings for Permission manager to review access by type. On some phones it is under Security & privacy → Privacy.

Check camera, microphone and contacts access against the feature you actually use. Denying a necessary permission can stop that feature working; make changes one at a time and test the result.

3. Choose location access deliberately

Review each app's location permission. Depending on the phone and app, choices can include access while using the app, asking each time, or denying access. Use approximate location where it is available and sufficient for the task.

4. Check supported theft-protection features

Set a screen lock first. In Settings, search for Theft protection. Google's documented route is Google → All services → Theft protection. Review the features your phone offers and read their explanations before enabling them.

Support varies. Google says these theft-protection features are not supported on Android Go devices, tablets or wearables; individual controls also have software and hardware requirements. A grayed-out control may indicate lack of support. Do not install an unknown “unlock” app to force it on.

5. Run Google Security Checkup

Open Google Security Checkup directly. Review its recommendations, account recovery details and signed-in devices. Consider a passkey or 2-Step Verification appropriate to your account, and keep a safe recovery method before relying on a new sign-in setup.

A small checklist to keep

  • Record your phone model and Android version.
  • Review one setting at a time.
  • Check that important app features still work afterward.
  • Keep recovery information private and accessible to you.
  • Use official help if a menu differs; avoid random “security fixer” downloads.
